When talking isn’t enough… What is Somatic Work?

Past experiences and traumas can leave lasting effects on your body and mind. These can shape your perception, and influence your relationships with yourself, others, and the world around you.

They can keep parts of you trapped in the past.

The body needs time and space to express these entrapped feelings to stop your suffering in the present.

Somatic work can help you navigate and heal what your body is holding onto.

Many of my clients come to me struggling with:

Persistent Physical Tension:

Unexplained muscle tightness, or a constant feeling of being trapped in your own body.

Nervous System Burnout:

Feeling perpetually on edge, hyper-vigilant, easily overwhelmed, or completely shut down, flat, and numb.

The Mind-Body Disconnect:

Feeling cut off from your physical sensations, leaving you exhausted and searching for a way back to yourself.

Somatic work helps with all of these. Slowly getting in touch with your body, and allowing it to be heard. It takes openness, bravery and patience, but we can do it together

F.A.Q

We start the session having a check in to see where you, and your body is.

Slow down if needed and sit comfortably.

We pay attention to the body’s signals, these are known as ‘Felt Sense’. Keeping it slow, and stopping anytime you like.

We will pay attention to your body’s signals, leading with curiosity, pausing if needed.

We may include slow movements as we follow your body’s feedback.

We will be constantly communicating, tracking the sensations, and looking for signs of re-regulation. These maybe vary from subtle to intense, all are welcome and encouraged.

We may use a variety of methods to your needs in the moment. Meaning we can move more, using the space in different ways. Or swap to integrate fascia or energy work on the couch.

A form of bodywork where the therapist connects with the client’s fascia network.

This contact allows for fascia and somatic release to take place. Meaning we are letting go of embodied trauma.

As with all trauma work, we work slowly and together, keeping communication at all times.

It’s quiet and gentle with a mixture of techniques including limb/head pulling, stretching and holding.

Together we look for signs of somatic release.

These signs include…

  • Shaking and twitching
  • Body feedback, like temperature changes, lightness, heaviness, tingles, energy shifts, calm.
  • Contractions and spontaneous movement.
  • Emotional shifts
  • Yawning
  • Tears
  • Exhaustion
  • Sighs
  • Burps and stomach noises.

Somatic trauma therapy can help to process and let go of what we hold on to after any kind of experience that our system couldn’t deal with in a healthy way at the time.

It doesn’t matter if it was so long ago you can’t remember, or if you’ve had talking therapy about it already.

These can include..

  • Childhood trauma
  • Abusive relationships
  • Loss and abandonment
  • Sexual, emotional, or physical abuse
  • Physical or emotional neglect
  • Assault or accidents
  • Stress
  • PTSD
  • Anxiety
  • Inability to show and process emotions in a healthy way
  • Poor emotional regulation
  • A feeling of numbness, heaviness, emptiness, or unsettled in the body
  • Autoimmune and inflammatory health issues
  • Not being able to clearly recall chapters of life/events that were distressing
  • Physical pain
  • Unable to ‘feel’
  • Avoidance of activities
  • Addiction
  • Tense, stiff body
  • Lack of self confidence
  • Fatigue

When we are working, we are looking for the opportunity for your body to unburden itself (to put something down).

These things can be found via the nervous system, or the fascia.

When we tune into one, the other is also involved. However, the pathway we chose can make a difference.

When we are in a Somatic Therapy session, the primary route is the nervous system.

When we have a Somatic Fascia Release session, the fascia is the main route.

We can work with whichever feels like the best session by session.

The bulk of the work tends to happen in Somatic Therapy.

It’s advised that people start their journey with learning to navigate ‘felt sense’ in somatic sessions, and we can lean on the fascia work, if/when appropriate for you.

For Somatic Therapy I use a green bottle pay scale.

It’s honesty based, please pick what tier suits you best for yourself.

You can bump about the scale as your circumstances change, or how often you’re coming in.

Low £75
Standard £85
Standard Plus £95

If you are booking Fascia work on it’s own, this is a fixed price depending on how long you book for (usually 70 or 90min)

Healing from trauma isn’t a smooth or single pathway..

There’s many factors to take into consideration.

What you’re holding in your system is unique to you.

How much you’ll need to put down, how old, deeply ingrained and complicated it is.

How long it takes for your system to allow something to leave.

The pace your system processes and metabolizes the changes we make each time we put something down. (the bumpy bit)

How regularly you come in for sessions.

What your support network, and life outside our sessions is like.

The ultimate honest answer is:

You never really get to the end of your trauma and become ‘trauma free or healed’. New things get added, as life plays out. But you are always making changes.

Every time you go in, let your body feel heard and have a chance to express, you’re getting somewhere.

Why pick me?

I love looking after people.

I’ve always done it, including over 20 years of bodywork. This gives me a different kind of attention to embodiment than most Somatic Therapists. It also gave me license to train in Somatic Fascia Release.

So I can use the two in tandem.

Having a bumpy road in my own Somatic journey gave me first hand experience on why something like Energy work can also be so helpful. It’s why I hold 3 qualifications from the School of holistic Therapies and use all 3 when needed.

So when it gets rough (which it will) I can help you feel more like you can ride the waves of processing. You can’t get that in many places!

I don’t rush my sessions. I give us more time. You have flexible booking and a choice of locations to see me.
I believe in diversity and inclusion, which is reflected in my pricing tiers and my personal life

❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤

I’m also a good egg.

    Testimonals

Marie-Louise is a great therapist! I have been getting regular treatments for over a year now due to back pain from previous injury alongside being in a very sedentary job. I have never before found someone who is able to find the pain points so quickly and immediately know what to do to relieve the pain! She's also so friendly and makes you feel really comfortable and always uses the time effectively to make sure you get the most out of your money! Having been to various therapists, osteopaths and acupuncturists in the past, I would now never swap to anyone else! I would highly recommend!

Marie-Louise is brilliant and I would 100% recommend her Somatic Trauma Healing practice. Not only does she understand and master the correlation between the physical and emotional, but creates an environment that feels safe and encouraging to explore and expand in ways I have not found with talking therapies. Several sessions in and I already feel a profound difference in my body and mind as well as a sense of optimism for the future.

Marie-Louise is total magic. I’ve experienced really good energy healing before, but I have never felt energy coming through someone’s hands as strongly as I did with her. It was so powerful I could feel things moving and shifting in my body. I went into the session feeling quite stagnant and came out feeling so much clearer and in flow. Afterwards I felt so much more able to do all the things I wanted and needed to do, so much more productive and unblocked. I’d also had this ache in my lower abdomen, and after the session it had completely disappeared, which was incredible. Marie-Louise has amazing energy and an ability to make anyone feel comfortable and safe. The space she creates feels so accepting and free of any judgement, there is nothing I would feel I couldn’t say to her, which makes such a great healing environment.

Marie-Louise is such a wonderful person and somatic therapist. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to have 1:1 sessions with her as they have had such a positive impact on me. They have helped to release trauma and then calm and ground me - such fantastic results. Marie-Louise creates such a safe and supportive environment, which really enabled me to work through some powerful releases. Thank you. I thoroughly recommend Marie-Louise
